Paul Munnery’s SWING STREET,

THE BRUNSWICK CLUB on THURSDAY 4^th AUGUST

Conceived a decade ago to celebrate the music of 1930’s New York City , SWING STREET has played clubs, theatres, dancehalls and festivals throughout the nation.  The somewhat unusual instrumental configuration reveals that this a band which ‘dares to be different’ – yet it has a lineup which allows for the kind of flexibility needed to play a repertoire of hot ‘swingers’, raw blues and tender ballads – the 1930’s decade was, after all, the Golden Age of popular song.  Variety of sound is also enhanced by an element of ‘doubling’, so the listener will hear from time to time the crystal chime of a vibraphone, as well as the raunchy blues-driven whine of a slide guitar!

For inspiration, Swing Street look to the recorded legacy of Teddy Wilson, Fats Waller, Lionel Hampton, Red Allen, Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, John Kirby and the countless others who made 52^nd Street ‘the street that never slept’.

Above all, no compromise is made where heat, excitement, creativity, swing and sheer entertainment are concerned!

PERSONNEL: Paul Munnery – Trombone, Slide Guitar. Leader of vintage-style big band Harlem for 30 years, favouring the NY style of JC Higginbotham, Joe Nanton, Benny Morton & Dickie Wells.

Richard West – Piano. Young musician of rare versatility, equally at home in piano styles of any era.

Rachel Hayward – Guitar, Vibraphone. Apprenticed with Ken Pye’s Creole Serenaders. Has toured extensively with Sammy Rimmington. Subsequently played with Harlem and Hootie. Leads popular all-women group Hotsy Totsy & is a director of Bude Jazz Festival.

Tony Sharp – Double bass. Another graduate of Ken Pye’s Serenaders, with many years experience on the Midlands jazz scene. Recently recruited to the Worcester Symphony Orchestra.

Clarence Nugent – Drums. Versatile performer, with many years experience in the world of New Orleans Jazz, worked with Tim Newman, New Orleans Heat and Ken Colyer.
